Quilting and Mindfulness - Weekly Quilt Inspiration #4

1. Introduction: Quilting & Mindfulness

For this week's inspiration, I want to talk about Quilting & Mindfulness and meditation.

That is because I have been thinking a lot about why quilting is so important to me. And one of the things is that quilting calms me down. I like to say that music keeps me sane and quilting makes me happy. Not the exuberant happy, but a deeply rooted joy in life.

I believe that sharing my story will show you that quilting can help you to, to get an anchor of peace for yourself in your daily life.

Quilting for me is deeply in connection to peace of mind. Therefore, this blog will be a bit personal as well. I believe that sharing my story will show you that quilting can help you to, to get an anchor of peace for yourself in your daily life.

1.1: The magic of creating something with your hands

Music keeps me sane and quilting makes me happy.

Working with your hands, and a combination of mindfulness with creativity, will help many people to find that deeply rooted joy and hold onto it.

It’s the kind of joy that’s still there, even if things go wrong or bad things happen. When everything around you falls apart, that joy will give you hope to keep going because things WILL get better. It takes the angle out of any stress or negative emotion.

In December last year, I came back to the Netherlands from 3 years wandering around in Kenya. I was burned out, scared, depressed and had no clue what to do with my life.

I found a coach who helped me to understand my personality and to find my calling in life: Quilting. Not ordinary quilting, but Sustainable Quilting! I had been working with an environmental non-profit those 3 years (Icare Sustainable International), and creating a sustainable future was clearly my calling.

Kick Ass Quilts and its values gave me a new purpose and joy in life.

Of course, starting a business was still scary. But because it was my mission, I got enough courage to keep going. Kick Ass Quilts is my baby who saved me, and I believe I can help other people to find and keep joy in their lives too. This all while working towards a sustainable future for everyone and making beautiful quilts.

Kick Ass Quilts and its values gave me a new purpose and joy in life.

In Kick Ass Quilts, quilting and sustainability come together. With the key values of sustainability, joy, connection, and mindfulness.

ALL FOUR values are necessary for a sustainable future where people life satisfying lives. Truly happy people take care of the planet. And happiness comes from all four of those values!

This blog is about the mindfulness aspect of Kick Ass Quilts. I’ll post other blogs about connection (charity and donating quilts), sustainability (upcycling), and joy (creating beauty) in the coming weeks.

With my work, I want to help other people to also (re-)discover their joy in life through quilting and to find peace of mind.

4.1: Guided mindful quilting

My plan is to do that with guided group sessions in the Kick Ass Quilts Community next to the upcycle quilt classes. This is for beginners, and also for experienced quilters who want to make their quilting more mindful.

Through the session, I guide you to focus on the purpose of the quilt you are working on and on the purpose of the meditation. At the end of the session, we check in whether you reached your purpose and how we can adapt for the next time.

Before I roll this out, I want to do a pilot with the people like you who have been following me for a while!

The pilot group sessions will be sometime in January. For the pilot, you don’t have to be part of the community, and it will be for a lower price.

Would you be interested to join one of those pilot sessions? Comment, sent me a message or email me at rianne@kickassquilts

Some questions for you:

  • What do you do to relax after a busy day?
  • Would you like to learn to quilt as a de-stress method?

Let's have a discussion in the comments!

The 'Quilting Out of Your Home'  e-book teaches you how to create beautiful quilts with stuff you already own!

For example, turn the old shirts of your husband into a quilted laptop sleeve. Or turn the outgrown clothes of your children into a quilt for their bed.

If you enrol for the newsletter, you get the e-book as a gift. And I promise you I won't send spam, only the occasional tips and inspiration to recycle old fabrics into new items.
