Memory quilt - how to quilt a lasting memory

How to make a memory quilt

How to make a lasting memory with 2 items of old clothes and 30 minutes of your day for 2 weeks.

Have never quilted before? Read about the basic quilt terminology here:

A memory quilt is a perfect way to use old clothes you have lying around to retain the memory associated with those clothes.

For example, you can use clothes from happy childhood memories. Or you can use the old clothes of a loved one to be reminded of them. Floor did that with her sister's clothes when her sister died. You can listen to her story here: a memory quilt for a sister. Also, some quilters make quilts for other people as a reminder of a person who passed on like Lucy from the Werkerij. You can read an interview with her here: Quilting lasting memories for others.

In this video, I explain how you can use memory quilts:

Quilting requires very few materials at it's core.  Especially when you are making a memory quilt, because you use existing fabrics.

As an example, here the list of materials for the 'A Taste of Quilting'  mini memory quilt a long:

  • 2 items of clothing (preferably non-stretch)
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Scissor
  • Graph paper
  • cardboard
  • pins
